What’s new on the art gallery scene ? If you are not familiar with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, their upcoming exhibition, Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation, will be viewable starting October 18, 2020 to May 16, 2021. This exhibition
“illuminates how this group’s subversive abstractions of both visual and verbal language—including neo-expressionism, freestyle sampling, and wildstyle lettering—rocketed their creative voices onto the main stages of international art and music. It is the first major exhibition to contextualize Basquiat’s work in relation to hip-hop and marks the first time his extensive, robust, and reflective portraiture of his Black and Latinx friends and fellow artists has been given prominence in scholarship on his oeuvre.”
If you don't know, Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat paved the way for graffiti artists who have made a name for themselves in the New York Gallery scene. He also used his art as a political statement to invoke social discourse around colonialism, class systems, and racism. Despite his short career, Basquiate’s neo-expressionist pieces have redefined American Contemporary art. You hear and see references to his work in the music, art and fashion industry so why not see what the hype is about and support black art in spaces where there has historically been a lack of visibility.
And what better way to show off how deep and intellectual you are than engaging in a healthy discussion around art, oppression, and hip hop on an art gallery date.
While this exhibit is a must-see it is important that we continue to be mindful of social distancing rules. To follow social distancing rules, advance timed-entry tickets are required for all visitors. You can learn more about the exhibit and ticketing on the Museum of Fine Arts Boston website.
